A featured snippet is the boxed answer Google pulls from a page and shows above the standard results. The source page keeps its organic listing and gains the most visible slot on the page — often called "position zero".
Snippets appear on question-shaped queries where Google is confident one passage answers the query directly. They come in a few formats — paragraph, numbered or bulleted list, table, and video — and the format is dictated by the question: a "how to" gets steps, a "what is" gets a paragraph, a "best X" comparison often gets a table.
Google does not need your permission or special markup to build one; it extracts the passage from a page already ranking on page 1, usually in the top five. So winning a snippet is rarely about outranking everyone — it is about being the page that states the answer most cleanly, in the format the query implies, within reach of the top.
The trade-off is real. A snippet can lift click-through sharply on queries where the answer invites a follow-up, and suppress it on queries the box fully satisfies. The same mechanism now feeds AI Overviews, which cite sources in a similar way, so pages structured to be extractable are increasingly the pages that get quoted by AI answers too.
The practical play is structural. Put a direct 40–60 word answer immediately under a heading that matches the question wording, use ordered lists for processes and tables for comparisons, and keep one question per section. Then track which of your page-1 keywords have a snippet held by someone else — those are the cheapest visibility wins available, because you are already qualified.
Examples
- “How to calculate ROAS” — a numbered-steps snippet taken from the page that laid the calculation out as a list, not the page ranking #1.
- “What is a good conversion rate” — a paragraph snippet that answers fully; the box wins the impression and the click rate drops for everyone.
- A comparison table snippet for “semrush vs ahrefs pricing”, pulled from a page in position 4.
Common questions
How do I get a featured snippet?
Rank on page 1 for the query first, then answer it directly in 40–60 words immediately under a heading that mirrors the question, using the format the current snippet uses — paragraph, list, or table.
Do featured snippets reduce traffic?
It depends on the query. If the box fully answers a simple question, clicks fall for everyone on the page. If the answer prompts a follow-up, the source page usually gains clicks along with the visibility.
How is a featured snippet different from an AI Overview?
A featured snippet is an extract from a single page shown verbatim. An AI Overview is a generated summary synthesised from several sources with links out. Both reward the same thing: clearly structured, directly stated answers.
