The local pack is the block of three business listings with a map that Google shows for location-based queries. It sits above the organic results and takes most of the clicks on any query with local intent.
For anything a person might want nearby — a dentist, a bakery, a plumber — the local pack is effectively the results page. It appears above organic listings, occupies the visible area on mobile, and offers directions and a phone number without a click through to any website. Ranking first organically underneath it is worth considerably less than being one of the three.
Entry is not governed by the same signals as organic ranking. Google weighs relevance, distance from the searcher, and prominence, and the entity being ranked is your Google Business Profile rather than your website. Distance means results are literally different street by street, so "we rank third" is only true from a specific point on a map.
Prominence is the part you can influence. It draws on review count and rating, citation consistency (your name, address, and phone matching across directories), category selection, photos and posts, and the authority of your website behind it. A complete, actively maintained profile with a steady flow of recent reviews beats a neglected one with a stronger website more often than most owners expect.
The practical play is to run the profile like a landing page: exact primary category, complete attributes and hours, real photos, questions answered, and a systematic way of asking every satisfied customer for a review. Then build one location page per site with consistent NAP details and embedded specifics, and track rankings from several points across your service area rather than from your office.
Examples
- “Coffee shop near me” — three listings and a map fill the phone screen; the first organic result never gets seen.
- A business ranking in the pack from one side of the city and nowhere from the other — distance doing exactly what it's designed to do.
- A practice with 180 recent reviews outranking a competitor with a better website and 12 reviews from 2021.
Common questions
How do I rank in the local pack?
Optimise the Google Business Profile, not just the website: exact primary category, complete information, real photos, consistent name/address/phone across directories, and a steady stream of recent reviews. Support it with a proper location page on your site.
Why does the local pack show only three results?
It's a compressed module designed for mobile. "More places" opens the fuller local finder, but the visible three take the overwhelming share of clicks — which is why fourth place is a very different business outcome from third.
Do I need a physical address to appear?
You need a verified Business Profile with either a physical location customers can visit or a defined service area. Service-area businesses can hide the address, but a profile with no verifiable presence won't rank.
